Ongoing Research on Mining

Dr Bezuidenhout and Prof Buhlungu are extending their research on mining to include a study of the changing residential patterns for mineworkers. The study takes the compound as a point of departure and explores how it has been changing in the last 20 years, particularly since the end of apartheid. In addition, one of the Department of Labour interns is exploring the sociological implications of the introduction of subcontracting and the women in the mining labour force, particularly their participation in underground mining operations.
