Fair Globalisation in Southern Africa

In April 2005, a conference was held in association with International Labour Organisation's (ILO) International Institute of Labour Studies (IILS) to discuss the implications for Southern Africa of the report of the ILO's Global Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation. Participants from the region attended the conference, including representatives from government, business and labour organisations. The event was used to strengthen cooperation between SWOP and researchers from the region. Professor Webster and Dr Bezuidenhout drafted a formal response to the Commission's report, which will be published in the journal Labour, Capital and Society in 2006.

On the basis of the success of the policy workshop, the ILO in Pretoria commissioned SWOP to produce a 10,000 word report on Fair Globalisation in the Southern African region. It was also agreed that the ILO and SWOP will co-host a policy workshop on Fair Globalisation every two years, starting in 2007.
